Tell us about yourself.

I’m Luis Martinez I’ve worked in the facilities management for 35 years, and I’m the executive director of energy for Miami-Dade County Public Schools.

What are your organizations energy and sustainability goals and targets?

What our Department does specifically for the district is perform guaranteed energy performance contracts, which are energy contracts. We evaluate facilities energy use, we evaluate their water consumption.

In 2021, Miami-Dade County school board approved a committee called the 2030 Clean Energy Committee, which their ultimate goal was to use clean energy by 2030. We’ve also wanted to increase the diversion from solid waste to recycling here in the district. So we’ve reached out to different organizations and incorporated new technologies where we can actually measure the solid waste that we are producing and the recycling that we’re producing at the individual tank levels.

What was the situation like before using technology? And now that you have EnergyCAP, how have your processes improved?

We literally went from a CRT terminal with black screen and green lettering and paper reports that had sprocket holes on both sides to a modern data driven database system that has the capacity to produce reports at the facility level and the sub facility level and custom at a glance dashboards for school site leaders to examine their energy use. that’s also capable of producing reports at a macro level that my Department can use to target facilities with high energy consumption.
